FREIBESETZT refers to an exhibition in the Kunsthalle Exnergasse in 2005 (freibesetzt zine).Places and structures in the Netherlands and Austria, which exemplify experimental modes of action, living, and thinking, were portrayed and discussed on the basis of biographies, experiences, and forms of expression in-between the notions of free and occupied space.
On November 27 the curators of this exhibition, Peter Blakeney and Christine Schöffler, will hold a prologue based on the theme. Thereafter, artist Reni Hofmüller will freely interpret the title FREIBESETZT with an artistic intervention in < rotor > in Graz. The evening concludes with an epilogue as an informal finale. A live video stream of the event in Graz will be shown in the Kunsthalle Exnergasse.

Christine Schöffler & Peter Blakeney, born in Austria and Canada, studies in fashion, design, and architecture, work as artists, writers, and translators in Vienna. Long-time (now ex-) inhabitants and supporters of Het Poortgebouw, a (sub)cultural working and living space in Rotterdam.

Reni Hofmüllerdeals with art in technological contexts and the relationships between art, technology, and society. She is a founding member of ESC media art lab, Radio Helsinki, mur.at, and member of the IMA Institute of Media Archeology. She is a vocalist in the postpunk band Lonesome Hot Dudes, part of the /etc ecletic tech carnival, developing a feminist server, and active at TransHackFeminist meetings.

< rotor > center for contemporary art is based in the Annenviertel in Graz. In his neighbourhood < rotor > presents contemporary art, provides essential content for discussion, and communicates contemporary art to a broad public. The programme departs from visual arts and focuses on artistic works that explicitly deal with the social, political, ecological, and economicquestions of the present day.

Reni Hofmüller’s intervention takes place in the framework of the exhibition“TheAnarchistic  Amateur’s Alphabet”, which can be seen in < rotor > from September 21 to December 21, 2019. The exhibition draws connections between the texts of writer and anarchist Herbert Müller-Guttenbrunn (1887–1945) and works by 50 artistic positions.

Exhibition and Documentation: Throughout the complete duration of the 19892019 KEX OPENprogramme artistic and documentary photography and text works will be generated and presented in a continuously growing exhibition.

A cooperation with vienna poetry school: On this evening author Barbara Zeman is invited to observe the event in theKunsthalle Exnergasse—and thus also the event in < rotor > via live stream—and compose a written piece based upon it. It will be exhibited in the Kunsthalle Exnergasse from Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
Barbara Zeman, born 1981 in Burgenland, has been living in Vienna for 18 years, where she studied history and wrote as a journalist for Falter, The Gap, and Die Presse. She has received numerous work and travel grants for her short stories; in 2012 she won the Wartholz Prize.
