Nile Sunset Annex will have a week-long exhibition at KEX Studio opening on 24 July at 6 pm. There will be some wrapped objects, a number of mysterious photographs, several laminated screen prints, and irregular beats. There will be overlaps with a week-long exhibition at the nearby Egyptian Cultural Office which opens the same day. Taha Belal, Hady Aboukamar, and Jenifer Evans, artists and founders of Nile Sunset Annex, are the KEX Artists in Residence, invited for June-July 2013.
Nile Sunset Annex is an artist-run project in Cairo, Egypt. It functions primarily as a self-funded, experimental artist-run space which occupies a room in a flat in Cairo’s central Garden City neighbourhood. It offers local and international artists a space to realise month-long exhibitions, as well as organizing group shows. In response to a perceived gap in Egypt, it focuses on exhibiting physical objects as opposed to digital artworks, although not exclusively. It keeps one work from each show in order to create a contemporary art collection that can be shown in the future as an exhibition in the space but also elsewhere, and it produces a publication alongside each exhibition in Arabic and English, using a completely different format each time.
Nile Sunset Annex also runs a sporadic parallel program of discussions and screenings in the space. Furthermore, it acts as a technical team that installs contemporary art exhibitions in Cairo. Nile Sunset Annex was founded in January 2013 by the artists Taha Belal, Hady Aboukamar, and Jenifer Evans.
