I keep reminding myself ... that sometimes, as in a camera obscura room, it is necessary to turn one‘s back on the thing one hopes to see.
Rodney Graham
Commentary is a remark and interpretation on the one hand, yet always a text in its own right. It repeats aspects of the original text to which it relates, and at the same it attempts to tease things out that haven't been written there. In some cases the commentary sets off further commentaries, and therefore becomes an original text on its own.
The exhibition Kommentar als selber was ("commentary as its own thing") thematizes this transference. On display are works consisting of self-commentaries as well as those commenting upon one other. Other reference points in this exhibit are art historical trophies, as well as favorites of the appropriation art community. In addition there are also works whose existence cannot be verified.
Within the indistinguishability between original text and commentary a space opens up, to be filled with new meaning.
Several temporal events within Kommentar als selber was attempt to expose historically solidified positions from this perspective. Performances let commentary speak within the fugitive nature of the moment.
