Home life seems to have separated from life in general: we withdraw into our homes, where we design our own private ideal world. The history of home life seems to be a history of collecting. We surround ourselves with objects via which we apparently convey our own individual taste.

But is this really possible on an individual level in the face of a global furnishings industry? It looks as if we are living in stage sets and as if television or advertising is delivering images designed to increase our desire for them.
