Täterätää! Back with a BANG! KEX re-opens!

After almost a year of comprehensive refurbishment, Kunsthalle Exnergasse (KEX) will finally reopen its upgraded exhibition spaces to the public in January 2024, and it’s time to celebrate in style: with a multifaceted exhibition project featuring interventions and performances that unite the past and the future.

Artists: Andreas Fogarasi, Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir, Cæcilie Heldt Rønnow, Georgia Holz and Seth Weiner, Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch
Performative Inserts by KinderKultur, performing arts and WUK Musik

Ddu-du ddu-du! Step right up! Barrier-free in a new outdoor elevator or step by step on the freshly painted staircase into KEX, where the wooden floor smells of fresh oil. But the improvements go far beyond just the essential renovations. There are new openings to the outside and between the interior spaces, the views evince an expanded sense of space with new, communicative perspectives.

The re-opening also marks an anniversary: for 35 years now, KEX has been facilitating and initiating diverse exhibitions, artistic projects, discourses, and collaborations. And that’s precisely what we have in mind for the future, too.

“What’s important to us” was the driving inspiration for our first exhibition project upon return. Thematically, temporally, spatially, geographically, up to the Zukunftshof. Analytical and open to coincidences at once. What we have left behind, come to love, or collected is combined with the new.

Andreas Fogarasi elaborates his series "Nine Buildings, Stripped" for KEX using materials and architectural elements collected from the WUK construction site to create an abstract portrait of the location. Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir and Cæcilie Heldt Rønnow activate the new spaces with bodies, sounds, and voices. Together with artist Seth Weiner, curator Georgia Holz is developing a speculative spatial narrative for the KEX collection. And finally, Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch will develop an image series that brings together the various positions and artists in a conceptual framework.

On three evenings over the course of the opening exhibition, the KEX office will be used by colleagues from the other WUK sectors KinderKultur, performing arts, and Musik. These INSERTS will be a load of fun and a feast for the senses. We will dine and discuss at long tables, and all the guests are invited to join in the games and dancing.

Full outdoor shot of a grayscale image, likely a vintage photograph or film frame. The foreground shows a beach or sandy area. Several indistinct human figures are clustered together, lying or positioned in a way that suggests activity of some kind. The figures lack clear detail, appearing as light or dark shapes against the surrounding sand or water. The scene is somewhat blurred or grainy with a noticeable texture, typical of older photography or scans of film. The overall tonal range is muted, consisting primarily of grays, with subtle variations in shading. No distinct coloration is present. The background is a similar muted gray tone extending out of view, lacking any contrasting light or shadow that would make the figures especially noticeable.
